Charity Delivers For Speedel Owner Shiraz

Knowledge and experience; two beneficial factors when starting your own business and assets that Shiraz Sidat possessed ahead of establishing his company, Speedel.

A Sameday business critical delivery service, Speedel provides bespoke solutions for its client base on a 24-7, 365-day-a-year basis. With the help of an interest-free loan from The Sir Thomas White Loan Charity, Shiraz was able to get Speedel off the ground and is now keen to share his experiences of starting a business with fellow aspiring entrepreneurs.

The 31-year-old, from North Evington, is to be one of the key speakers at The Sir Thomas White Loan Charity’s forthcoming Leicester Business Festival event, entitled Challenges and Triumphs of Business Start-Up, providing insight into his personal challenges.

“I’m looking forward to sharing my experiences and supporting anybody that is in the same position as I was,” says Shiraz ahead of the event at Friars Mill on 31 October.

The idea for Speedel came through a combination of experience based in the workplace and the knowledge possessed through his father, as Shiraz explains.

“I began working at the age of 18 within the aerospace engineering sector as a Laboratory Technician in Leicester and finished as a Laboratory Operations Manager in 2017,” he says. “Having dealt with time-critical shipments and urgent requirements I learnt about Sameday delivery and what it entails.

“Whilst working in Derby and spending 10-plus hours commuting each week, I felt that I needed a change. I wanted to do something where there was no limit to my potential and wanted to shine as bright as I could.

“My father worked in the transport industry for over 30 years and I had a number of discussions with him,” Shiraz continues. “Following on from that, we both had a ‘light bulb’ moment to set up a B2B Sameday delivery company.”

The initial challenge that Shiraz encountered was the construction of a business plan – integral to any successful company and something that is a key part of the application process for an interest-free loan from The Sir Thomas White Loan Charity.

An appointment with NBV and Sir Thomas White Loan Charity Trustee, Gau Naik, had huge benefits.

“I happened to come across the Charity when searching the Internet for business support in Leicester,” reveals Shiraz.

“Having never completed a business plan before, it was tough putting all my thoughts and ideas onto paper. I must have downloaded five or six templates and began completing them but needed some additional support.

“This is when I got in touch with Gau at NBV after seeing his contact details on the Sir Thomas White Loan Charity application form. I attended a number of business workshops and managed to get his support in order to put my plan together. It now enables me to plan strategically for now and the future and will continue to assist me moving forward.”

Applying for a business loan to aid Speedel’s marketing, in addition to vehicle purchase and insurance, as well as computer equipment, Shiraz admits that the terms of the loan in particular have allowed his business to grow.

“The application process was simple but detailed, which allowed me to look at the bigger picture,” he says. “The interview was a fair and supportive process which gave me the opportunity to put forward my proposal and why I needed support from the Charity.

“The loan has enabled us to grow the business by concentrating on what we do best,” Shiraz adds. “It has allowed us to purchase the necessary equipment and services needed.”
