The Sir Thomas White Loan Charity has announced that over £500,000 has been provided in the form of nine-year interest-free business and education loans in 2015; the highest total approved during a calendar year in the Charity’s history.
Following the latest round of interviews with prospective borrowers, in which a total of £144,455 was approved by the Charity’s Trustees across 23 applicants, a total of 20 new businesses have been provided with the funds required to assist start-up projects within Leicestershire, whilst a further 59 loans have been delivered to students wishing to continue studies beyond undergraduate degrees.
Named after Sir Thomas White, one of the city’s most historic benefactors who features on the famous clock tower in Leicester city centre, The Sir Thomas White Loan Charity provides loans of up to £15,000 to people over the age of 18 and under the age of 35 within the county to help fund new business ventures within the region, in addition to education loans of up to £6,000 to assist costs of post-graduate study.
The Charity’s loans are interest-free for a period of nine-years, with repayments made in equal instalments after the first three years.
Companies that have grown following initial assistance from The Sir Thomas White Loan Charity include Barrie Stephen Hair – which now includes salons in Leicester, Anstey, Ashby and Narborough, Leicester Running Shop in Clarendon Park, Bossa Café in Leicester and sports marketing agency Soar Media.
Delighted to close 2015 on a high, The Sir Thomas White Loan Charity Chair, Hugh Stevenson, commented: “This year’s figures are incredibly pleasing and we’re happy to have been able to support 79 people within Leicestershire and Rutland with the funds that will help them reach their personal goals, whether that be in business or enhancing their education in post-graduate study.
“However, despite this excellent record figure, The Sir Thomas White Loan Charity is now looking towards 2016 and aims to provide even more in interest-free loans next year. Leicestershire is brimming with budding entrepreneurs, having provided the base of operations for many of the country’s largest companies, and we are dedicated to helping business ventures get started.
“With 2016’s first round of borrower interviews taking place in early February, I’d encourage anybody seeing the New Year as an opportunity to become their own boss to get in touch and apply, as we would be eager to meet you and hear your plans.”
